Following hundreds of entries, Homeland Plus, Westport, has been selected as one of the top 30 finalists in the Retail Excellence Ireland Store of the Year Awards for 2016/17. The award recognises and celebrates the outstanding performance and vision of stores, places, people, websites, and suppliers throughout the Irish retail industry. Last year, Retail Excellence Ireland awarded Homeland Swinford the prestigious title of Best DIY and Agri Store for 2015/16 for its outstanding quality of service and customer experience. This was a major accolade for Mayo and for Homeland.

Mayo retailers shortlisted in national industry awards

Four Mayo retailers are through to the final of Ireland’s Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards (IF&CR) 2016, it was announced this week. McHugh's Spar/Texaco in Ballindine is through to the 'Forecourt Category 2 with C Store 1,101-1,750 sq ft finals. Hoban’s Centra in Westport is a 'Newcomer of the Year' finalist. Corrib (SPAR) Ballyhaunis is a finalist in the 'Best Customer Service' category, while Corrib (SPAR) Swinford is a finalist in the 'Best Food to Go category'.

Swinford gears up for Síamsa Sráide

The official opening of Síamsa Sráide will be performed by Ciarán Staunton from New York and recipient of the Michael Davitt Award Mayo for his work on behalf of Irish emigrants abroad. Mr Staunton will highlight the nightmare of the Undocumented Irish in America, Australia, etc, as well as highlighting the negative issues that many experience when they return. This opening is in recognition of the importance of our diaspora in promoting tourism in this area.

Junior School Warden scheme set up in Swinford

The Junior School Warden service is designed to provide safe crossing facilities in the vicinity of primary schools in provincial towns and villages where a 50km/h speed limit applies adjacent to the school. The Junior School Warden scheme has been operating in Ireland since 1969. Its continued success is due to the dedication, hard work, and co-operation of all involved in its implementation, including Garda trainers, school principals, local authorities, and most importantly, the pupils themselves.

Swinford Tidy Towns committee have requested all candidates and all parties in the upcoming General Election to refrain from putting up election posters inside the Swinford town boundaries.

Swinford Tidy Towns

Mayo County Council is once again this year providing free Christmas tree recycling in Mayo. Christmas tree recycling in Swinford will be provided for at the council depot on Kilkelly road only. In Swinford and surrounding areas, trees will be accepted until tomorrow, Saturday January 16. Ensure all decorations are removed from Christmas trees prior to recycling.
