After 110 minutes of hard work, sheer will and effort Castlebar Celtic saw their dreams of a tenth Connacht Junior Cup come cracking apart in the most heartbreaking of ways in a penalty shoot-out. The Hoops will feel hard done by, having made most of the running during a game played in wild and wet conditions in Milebush Stadium. But Ballinasloe were the ones to get their hands on the old trophy thanks to a 4-2 win from the spot kicks. Jason Hunt slammed home the first kick of the shoot-out for Celtic, with Ballinasloe Town captain Peter Keighery responding in kind. Both sides also converted their next kicks, with Ronan O'Boyle doing the necessary for the Castlebar men and Gary Egan for the Roscommon League side. Gerry Hunt tried to replicate his brothers effort with Celtic's third penalty, but his effort was scooped over Aidan Fallon's bar, Mark Duffy saw his effort just about get past Stephen Cafferkey to hand the advantage to Ballinasloe Town. Westport Untied kept up their 100 per cent start to the Super League last weekend with a 2-0 win over a winless Straide and Foxford United. The tangerine clad side were condemned to their third defeat on the trot and will have to turn things around soon or they could be sinking back down to the Premier A before they know it. JP O’Gorman put Westport on their way with a goal inside a quarter of a hour and Pat Fitzgerald made sure with a strike from the penalty spot midway through the second half. The champions Castlebar Celtic were made to work hard by Michael Hutton’s Claremorris side in Celtic Park to pick up their second win of the season. Stevie Gavin was the man who broke the deadlock in what was very tough battle between a Claremorris side who are looking to make improvements on last year’s very competitive run in the league. Both sides are locked together on six points from their opening three games, alongside Ballina Town. Ballina who went down to Westport United in the previous week bounced back with style with a 4-1 win over Manulla at home last weekend. The final game in last weekend’s Super League saw Fahy Rovers come home from Erris with a point after a 0-0 draw with Iorras Aontaithe.

The Elverys Sports Super League will enter its final four game stretch this weekend with Castlebar Celtic looking to stay the course to the title over the last handful of games. Declan Kilkelly’s side are currently five points in front of second placed Claremorris, they kept the gap open thanks to coming out on the right side of an odd goal in seven encounter with bottom of the table Ballinrobe Town last weekend in Celtic Park. Celtic raced into a two goal lead early on only to be hit for three in a row by Ballinrobe, before goals from Stevie Gavin and Ger O’Boyle saw them win through at the end. On Sunday, Celtic will make the short hop to the Sportspark to take on Westport United at 2.30pm.

Castlebar Celtic are facing into a their opening game of the Newstalk A League this weekend with a injury crisis on their hands. Celtic will be without the services of Shane Hynes, Gary Price, Stevie Gavin, Ashley Stevenson, and Pat Fitzgerald on Saturday due to injury. But more importantly it looks like they will be without goalkeepers Danny O’Leary who has a groin injury and Robert Hennelly leaving them without a recognised number one between the posts. Castlebar Celtic manager Declan Kilkelly told the Mayo Advertiser this week, “ Danny had a great game last weekend against Carlow, but he played with a groin injury, he’s seeing a specialist, but we don’t know if he’ll be able to play any part in the game.” With no recognised goalkeeper available, Kilkelly could be in line for a place between the sticks himself for Celtic. “At the moment it looks like it could be me or an outfield player, but I’d prefer not to have to play, we just have to wait and see for now.”
