•A new race on the Galway athletic calendar has been scheduled for Castledaly in south Galway on Sunday (2pm). Organised with co-operation from Craughwell AC and AAI approved, the race will be run on the Gort to Loughrea road, with race headquarters at the local St Thomas GAA Club. This race is being organised in support of AIDS Partnership with Africa, a charity with which many locals have become actively involved. The two sides that are expected to battle for the last of three Heineken Cup places meet in this crunch Magners League fixture at the Galway Sportsground tomorrow (8pm). In the Irish pecking order it has always been Ulster which has grabbed that last place, and after Connacht’s loss in Edinburgh, there was nothing to suggest it would be otherwise. But last weekend’s spirited victory over Cardiff has provided Connacht with a much-needed confidence boost, and now Connacht coach Michael Bradley says it is vital his squad turns over Ulster if his side is to qualify for Europe.

The Pagodas Temple — the one stop shop for martial arts in Galway

The Pagodas Temple was started in 2005 by Chris Hickey, a fourth Dan black belt, the highest graded judo black belt in the west of Ireland. Mr Hickey always wanted to have his own dojo where he could pass his skill and knowledge on to others with a passion for the martial arts. This is due largely to the training he received in the Galway Judo Club, the support of his many friends, and his long time mentor Sensei John Creaven.

Next leg of Mayo AC road race league coming up fast

The Vodafone C& C Cellular Mayo AC Open Road League continues on Sunday October 11 with race seven of the nine race series. The Terry Fox four miler takes place at Ballina and is a one lap course starting and finishing near the track at Belleek Park. The Terry Fox run takes place annually at venues all over the world in support of the Terry Fox Foundation which raises funds for cancer research in memory of a brave young Canadian. The race will not have a prize fund as all money raised on the day will go towards the Terry Fox Foundation. The race starts at 3pm. Entries will be taken from 1.30pm at track clubhouse. Local man Michael Rice and his team of helpers have organised this race at Ballina for the past 17 years. Mayo AC is happy to support the great work done by Michael in his fund-raising effort.
