The Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group was formed in November 2015 as a community response to concerns over the condition of the mountain together with concerns around safety, liability of shareholders and landowners, the status of the Croagh Patrick as Ireland’s Holy Mountain and the absence of structures to manage the impact of growing numbers of recreational users on the natural environment, habitats and ecosystems of the area.

Mayo Ideas Lab received a national award at the recent European Enterprise Promotion Awards 2017 during SME Enterprise Week in Tallinn, Estonia. The European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) is an initiative by the European Commission aimed at recognising and rewarding exceptional examples of support and promotion of entrepreneurship across Europe. Companies from all EU countries, as well as Iceland, Serbia, and Turkey can take part in the competition, with some 2,800 projects getting involved since the awards were established in 2006.

An innovative exhibition with art works made by teenage Syrian refugees travels to Claremorris Library this week. The exhibition entitled Paper, Light and Shadow will open in Claremorris Library on Wednesday evening. The artists of this travelling exhibition are a group of teenage Syrian refuges who recently resettled in Mayo.

The Education and Training Working Group of the Mayo Local Community Development Committee are organising an Information, Education and Training Supports Expo in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, on Thursday, August 31, from 10am to 1.30pm. The aim of the Expo is to provide adults with information on the wide range of training and educational opportunities as well as information on the various supports and work placement programmes available to them. At the Expo there will also be workshops on self employment and returning to education and training.

The Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA) project of South West Mayo Development Company welcomes the news of the temporary hosting of 80 Syrian refugees in the west of Ireland in the neighbouring county Roscommon. The Emergency Reception and Orientation Centre in Ballaghdereen will open to temporarily accommodate refugees after their relocation from Greece to Ireland. The residents will receive initial supports, English language and induction to living in Ireland. After a six month period, as expected, these families will be further resettled across Ireland to independent living.
