Whatever happened to Barry’s tea? And other food conundrums

image preview

Barry’s tea still has that kick-awake taste in the morning when you take the first gulp; but tea in general has changed, and changed dramatically. Just look at the choice of teas next time you reach for a packet. Where once there was only Lyons, Barry’s and PG Tips, now there has to be a choice of at least 50 different blends including herbal, organic, loose or bagged, or the plain ordinary black. And I was surprised to learn that there are at lest two tea blenders in Galway; including Solaris Botanicals, which not only won last month’s Junior Chamber of Ireland Entrepreneur of the Year, but in the same week clinched a deal to supply Harrods of London.

First 2009, then onwards to Alpha Centauri

SINCE TIME immemorial, humans have asked ‘Are we alone?’ and have looked to the heavens and beyond in search of an answer. Out there in the cosmos, other, very different, forms of life may live on yet undiscovered planets.

JCI Galway honours Galway’s top young entrepreneurs for the eleventh year

Who will be Galway’s 11th Young Entrepreneur of the Year? The success of the JCI Galway Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award can be seen from its 11 years in existence. The competition celebrates the entrepreneurial vision of budding young Galway entrepreneurs like past winners Mike O’Connor of Bellissimo, Liam Dilleen of EZ Living, Pearce Flannery of Pragmatica, and Declan Ganley of Rivada Communications. The diversity of business ventures has been the hallmark of the competition. It was the success of Joerg Mueller’s dream to turn herbal medicine into a profession that led him to win last year’s competition.

Bothersome Man at Ballina Film Club

image preview

Ballina Film Club’s autumn/winter programme continues on Tuesday December 16 at 8pm, with The Bothersome Man in Ballina Arts Centre. Norwegian director Jens Lien's debut, The Bothersome Man is a surreal, idiosyncratic black comedy. When forty-year-old Andreas (Trond Fausa Aurvag) mysteriously arrives in a strange city, with no memory of how he arrived, it seems a perfect place to live. He is fitted out with an office at an accountancy firm, and a smart new apartment. The people are friendly; he even finds romance with the pretty Anne-Britt (Petronella Barker). But beneath the surface, there is something sinister. This clean, efficient, smiling town is entirely without human feeling. Dinner parties are strangely joyless affairs, where friends obsess over interior decor. Hot chocolate is bland. And anyway, where on earth is he? Soon, Andreas is determined to escape. Admission costs €7.

When it comes to Christmas, the best is always worth it

“Christmas dinner is the most important dinner of the year,” says Ray Colleran, third generation butcher in the city’s Mainguard Street. “And this year it’s more important than ever.” I was challenging Ray on the price of turkeys. One international supermarket chain is selling frozen geese for €25, how can they do that?

McCambridges brings brown

As the summer heats up, there might be many reasons to visit the beach, but there’s also a new, tasty way to cool down with a visit to Shop Street in Galway, as Murphys Ice Cream has launched a new flavour to celebrate the refurbishment of McCambridge’s. That venerable institution has installed a Murphys ice cream scooping cabinet, with twelve delicious flavours, including McCambridge’s Brown Bread ice cream, in the remodelled, gourmet food store.
