The elected members of Ballina Town Council this week were given presentations from representatives of both Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Federation of Irish Salmon and Sea Trout Anglers (FISSTA) on the potential harm that large scale salmon farming could do to the Moy if such a project went ahead in the future.

Clós Súgartha Bhearna-Na Forbacha Playground committee has launched a pop-up shop selling new and pre-owned clothes, accessories, homewares, and gifts as the fundraising drive for a playground in the area gains momentum. The committee recently welcomed the news that Bearna Co-Op has given permission for the playground to be developed at its multi-use games area in Truskey West.

The AGM of Mayo Athletics County Board took place in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar recently. Paddy Kelly, chairperson, welcomed everybody to the meeting especially the new club Aughagower. He congratulated Claremorris Athletic Club on the development of the new tartan track. He thanked all who helped out during the year in any capacity to help with the smooth running of competitions etc. Secretary Amanda Hynes presented her report to the meeting. Padraic Walsh treasurer presented a very healthy balance sheet to those present. He thanked the sponsors C & C Cellular because without them they would not be in a position to host their annual awards in the present format. Mayo GAA could be on the lookout for a new county secretary this morning. At an executive meeting last night it was expected that current county secretary, Kevin O’Toole, would have offered his resignation from the role to the executive. The Tourmakeady clubman who took over the position at the 2011 convention from Séan Feeney had previously served in a number of roles including PRO for the county board. O’Toole had been one of the driving factors behind the Cáirde Mhaigheo season ticket and supporters club which has been a big success since its inception last year.

Local businesses participating in the first phase of the SCCUL Mentors programme will share their success stories at the next week’s launch event of the 2013 programme. Bank of Ireland chief economist Dan McLaughlin will be the key note speaker at the event which takes place in the Clayton Hotel on Wednesday January 30 at 6pm.

Dr John Connolly, secretary of the Irish Association of Suicidiology, officially launched a countywide wellbeing campaign on Monday. The campaign is being led by the Mayo Suicide Prevention Alliance, a group which first formed in Mayo in 2009. It is made up of a wide range of organisations and groups working in the area of mental health and suicide prevention in the county.
