The winners of the Galway People of the Year Awards organised in partnership with Galway Credit Unions were announced at a press reception in the Galway Bay Hotel at the weekend. The winners will be honoured at a Gala Banquet and Presentation to be held in the Galway Bay Hotel on Saturday March 21, compered by Ollie Turner and broadcast live on Galway Bay fm.

UPSTART is an initiative of Mayo County council arts service celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities annually in December. In an effort to document and promote the work of the UPSTART programme, Mayo County Council Arts Service has developed the UPSTART website which was designed by Brett Henning.

Last week another truck overturned at Bawnmore Cross in Claregalway, spilling its load of huge logs across the road, onto the walls and into a field. This was the thirtieth time that an accident has happened here in the past few years, but the more remarkable fact is that nobody has yet been killed, given its proximity to a local national school. Last week, Cllr Malachy Noone said that it is only a matter of time before we see a school uniform trapped under those logs and now locals have said they have had enough.

The conditions weren’t the best - but there was enough drama to ensure that next weekends replay between these two east Mayo sides - will be one to watch. It’s hard to know which of these sides will feel the happier after the full time whistle - Kiltimagh led by seven early in the second half and missed a number of good chances throughout the game.

Ballina Arts Centre showcased some of the best in contemporary drawing from the Netherlands with Human Chain, an exhibition featuring the work of seven Dutch artists. The exhibition, which features a wide variety of styles of drawing, was selected by Arno Kramer (who is also one of the artists in the exhibition) and will run at the venue until the end of October.

Out they came in their thousands, in a weekend that saw fifty thousand shades of maroon on every street in the city and county.
