Councillor wants notice boards for Ballinrobe and Cong

Cllr Damien Ryan this week put forward a notice of motion calling for the council to provide information boards in the towns of Ballinrobe and Cong, so local voluntary groups could put up notices of events coming up in the area. The idea got the full backing of the other members of the council. Director of services for the area Seamus Granahan told the members it might be better to bring the idea to the relevant SPC first so that proper countywide guidelines could be drawn up to ensure such a service would not be abused by commercial interests.

Fiery Independent councillor Frank Durcan became involved in a war of words with top council officials, not for the first time, at Monday’s Mayo County Council meeting. The Castlebar auctioneer, in a notice of motion, called for a special meeting to be held to discuss “the inconsistency of planners, architects and director of services in dealing with planning applications.”

Henaghan calls for parking break for rate payers

Fine Gael councillor Brendan Henaghan has called for a break to be given to rate payers in relation to parking charges in the town. The Castlebar based businessman was speaking at the annual budget meeting of Castlebar Town Council this week when he said: “Can we see something done on car parking for the rate payers. It would be good to give something back, to those who continue to pay their rates on time and pay up. It’s a gesture that would be appreciated by them.”
