Galway Bay Sailing Club has organised the biggest event in the club's 40-year history to coincide with the visit to Galway of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Members of Volvo Ocean crews will be giving a special presentation to budding sailors in Galway on Monday June 1.

Andrew Moran from Newport has been announced as a finalist of the HB Let’s Sail competition, as part of the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover 2009. Primary and Secondary school students entered the competition to design and build a boat, made using HB ice-cream sticks. As a finalist Andrew will meet with Ian Walker from the Green Dragon team at the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday May 24. The overall winner, announced on the day, will receive a family trip to the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Stockholm.

On Monday the public will have a rare opportunity to hear some of the Volvo Ocean sailors’ life stories.

The Lough Ree junior sailing course begins next week on June 29 and runs until July 24.
