Galway ultra-runner, Richard Donovan, is attempting to become the first person to run seven marathons in seven continents in under five days, all in aid of GOAL's efforts to alleviate the suffering of people affected by famine and drought in the Horn of Africa.

The Mayo AC ladies team were on top form at the 25th European Club Road Race Cup in Almeirim in Portugal at the weekend. The four member team recorded exceptionally good times for the 15 kilometre race held on a flat course but in very warm summer-like conditions, with temperatures reaching 25 degrees.

Irish running legend Catherina McKiernan will be the race starter at the inaugural Conamara 10k on October 8.

Conditions were good for the second annual Kilmovee 10k last Saturday afternoon. Some said it was very hot, but nobody among the record turnout of runners and walkers — 335 finishers — was really complaining. There were entries from 16 counties also. While Hugh Armstrong was busy winning a silver medal in the All-Ireland youths’ mountain running championships in scenic Glendalough, the senior athletes of Ballina AC were also busy at a variety of races around the country. The evergreen Michael Courell made his annual trip to Kilnaboy, Co Clare for a tough 10 mile road race where he finished the race in 1:17:57. Running under eight minute mile pace all the way is no mean achievement for the course. Both Bernard Barrett and William Heverin made the trip to Dublin for the Great Ireland Run in the Phoenix Park. Both should be very happy with their times of 38:56 and 44:46 respectively. Both will use these times to set lower time targets for the remainder of the season.
