The volunteer lifeboat crew of Lough Ree RNLI will prominently feature in a forthcoming episode of the BBC TV series ‘Saving Lives at Sea’, due to air on Tuesday, October 15, at 8pm.

On Monday morning of this week Lough Ree RNLI Lifeboat volunteers were tasked by the Irish Coast Guard in Malin Head to come to the assistance of one person on board a 70 foot motorboat which had taken on a lot of water overnight in Athlone Town Marina.

Lough Ree RNLI went to the aid of a woman who became unwell on a boat on the lake on Tuesday evening and required a medical evacuation.

Lough Ree RNLI volunteers diverted from their regular training exercise recently to assist one person on board a boat with an engine fire followed by two people on board an inflatable dinghy.

Lough Ree RNLI is asking the public to support ‘Mayday’, the charity’s annual fundraising campaign. The appeal comes as the RNLI announced their rescue figures for 2018, which noted that the lifeboat crew on Lough Ree in Dromineer launched 72 times and assisted 188 people on the lough, making it one of the busiest stations in Ireland.

A successful and well attended race night, with the funds raised going towards the progressive work of the Athlone branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland and Athlone RNLI was held at the Lough Ree Inn on Saturday night last.
