Ballyglass RNLI has rescued three fishermen off the Mayo coast this morning, following a ten hour call out. The volunteer lifeboat crew was requested to launch their all-weather lifeboat at 7.45pm yesterday evening (Sunday, April 24) after a member of the public who was standing on the shore saw a vessel drifting and raised the alarm.

The crews of Lough Ree RNLI lifeboat and Irish Coast Guard helicopter participated in a joint training exercise on Lough Ree on April 10.

Lifeboat crews from Achill RNLI and Ballyglass RNLI took part in the Easter Sunday 1916 centenary commemoration which saw some 700 members of the Irish emergency services taking part in the State parade. Ballyglass RNLI coxswain John Walsh and Achill RNLI second coxswain Dave Curtis joined 50 of the charity’s volunteers and staff who came from lifeboat stations around the Irish coast and inland to parade through Dublin city centre to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising. Dave Curtis carried the RNLI’s flag for the charity in the parade.

Lough Ree RNLI received two calls for assistance over the Easter weekend, as improving weather and brighter evenings herald the start of the boating season.

Lough Ree RNLI lifeboat crew received their first callout of 2016 on Sunday, January 3, when a man living aboard a barge was marooned by a strong river current on the Shannon in Athlone.

Volunteers from Lough Ree RNLI were called to assist two people on September 30 after their motor cruiser ran aground on a shoal near Green Island on Lough Ree.

The Irish United Nations Veterans Association (IUNVA) made donations amounting to €5,000 at the function, to 10 local charities and organisations, and also distributed food hampers valued at €200 each to 10 other charities in the Athlone, Moate, and Clara areas.
