Introduced in 1963, the inshore lifeboat continues to be an invaluable asset in the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) fleet as new figures show the charity’s Inshore lifeboats have saved 30,778 lives across 60 years.

Excellence in volunteering awards were recently presented to three volunteers at Lough Ree RNLI, Damien Delaney, Tony McCarth and Bernard Larkin BEING recognised for their generous and significant contributions to the community and the charity.

Lough Ree RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew was called to assist 23 people in six different incidents during the month of May.

Representatives from the City of Galway Shipping company visited Galway RNLI during their weekly training session, to present the charity with a donation of €5,000. The company, which has been in operation since 1947, is based a short distance from the Galway lifeboat station, at New Docks.

The volunteer lifeboat crew welcomed University of Galway’s Prof Dara Byrne, Philip Parakal Augusthinose and Mike Smith to the station on Thursday last to see at first hand how the RNLI station operates and how clinical simulation can enhance casualty care and first aid training.

Just like the charity’s lifeboats, the RNLI’s fundraising team need a dedicated volunteer crew, volunteers being at the heart of the RNLI and comprising 95% of its people.

The RNLI is looking for new fundraising volunteers to join its lifesaving crews in Galway City, Clifden/Connemara and Aran Islands.

Following a two year break due to the pandemic, Galway RNLI’s Sample Our Soup fundraiser will return to the streets of Galway this Saturday.

Six crew members will be carrying pagers for the first time this Christmas at Galway RNLI. As the charity launches its Christmas appeal asking for help to continue its lifesaving work at sea, Aaron Reilly, James Corballis, Aaron Connolly, Sean McLoughlin, Ian Claxton and Shane Austin will be among the lifeboat crew preparing to drop their festive plans and go to the aid of someone in need if their pager sounds over the Christmas period.

Lough Ree RNLI marked a significant milestone on Monday last, October 17, when a cheque for €100,000 was presented to the RNLI as the local community contribution to the overall €1.2 million cost of the new lifeboat station on a site donated by the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland.
