On January 1 1984, President Patrick Hillery officially launched the Quincentennial, a year long celebration of 500 years of civic independence unique in western Europe. In 1484, a number of Galwegian merchants persuaded King Richard III to grant the city a charter which made the town a mayoral city. More than a decade of ‘Over the Edge

This month marks the commencement of the 11th year of the Over The Edge series of monthly literary readings run by poets Susan Millar DuMars and Kevin Higgins. Founded as a platform for emergent writers, OTE has showcased the work of some 300 authors since its inception. An impressive statistic in itself, no less impressive is the fact that more than 40 of the OTE readers have gone on to have their work published in book form. The high quality and lively diversity of their writing is much to the fore in the recently published Over The Edge, the First Ten Years, An Anthology of Fiction and Poetry from Salmon Poetry.

Belmullet Gaeltacht company heading to Philadelphia on trade mission

SELC, a company that specialises in electronic lighting controls and photocells, is going to Philadelphia as part of Údarás na Gaeltachta’s trade mission at the end of the month. The company is based in the Údarás na Gaeltachta business park in Belmullet. Six Gaeltacht companies along with representatives from Údarás na Gaeltachta will be in the US city from November 20 to 22 on invitation from the Irish-American Business Chamber Network (IABCN). The Gaeltacht companies are taking the opportunity to promote their businesses at an event organised by Údarás na Gaeltachta, the IABCN, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
