After a prolonged saga, a replica of the original statue of Pádraic Ó' Conaire is to return to Eyre Square following an eleven year absence. The original statue of the famed Irish literary giant dominated the top of the Square since it was unveiled by Eamon de Valera in 1935. The sculpture was a top attraction for visitors to Galway, many of whom had their photograph taken alongside the writer.

A bronze replica of the much-loved historical figure of Pádraic Ó Conaire, costing in the region of €45,000, could soon be placed where the original statue once stood in Eyre Square, perhaps finally bringing to an end a saga which councillors at a recent Galway City Council meeting said had gone on far too long.

The Galway City Museum will mark the 130th anniversary of the birth of Irish writer and journalist Pádraic Ó Conaire with a public lecture on his work this Saturday.

FAMILY FOLKLORE has it that when Pádraic Ó Conaire was broke, a fairly frequent occurrence by all accounts, he would approach the grandfather Tom ‘Cork’ Kenny, co-founder and editor of the Connaught Tribune, hoping he would publish a story in the paper and pay him.

The Galway City Museum is asking the public to submit their old photographs taken with the statue of Pádraic Ó Conaire in Eyre Square.

The Galway City Museum will celebrate the life and work of Pádraic Ó Conaire this Saturday from 2pm.

Galway City Council decided this past week to remove a statue memorializing the women who lived, worked and, in some cases, died at the Sisters of Mercy Magdalene laundry in the city. Dedicated in March 2009, the Mick Wilkins statue was commissioned by the same city councilors who now seek to remove it. It is located at the corner of Forster Street and Bothár Breandan O Eithir, standing in full public view close to where the laundry institution once stood.
