Martin Shanahan, star of RTE’s hit TV programme Martin’s Mad About Fish stepped out of the kitchen to officially launch the 57th Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, taking place from September 23 to 25, 2011.

The 57th Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, September 23 - 25 2011, will make a welcome return to a marquee this year and will be located at Galway Harbour.

The Festival of Fashion will kick off at 8pm today (Thursday) with a wine and canapés reception in the stunning Marine Institute in Renville, Oranmore. The event, in association with the Clarenbridge Oyster Festival, will get you ready for a season of festival fun from racing to arts and music to oysters. You are sure find a look to suit you with festive collections from Ail Ruin, Squisito, Sorelle, Concepts, Select, Madison, Nestor’s, Daisy, Brown Thomas, Shenil Shoes, Demora, and Standún.

The Oyster Pearl competition brings glamour and beauty to the Galway International Oyster Festival each year, and the glamour stakes have been raised even further this year with Fallers Jewellers offering a prize fund worth €5,000 for the Fallers Best Dressed Lady competition.

Clarenbridge GAA Club, in conjunction with rhe Clarenbridge Oyster Festival 2010, is hosting a fund-raising raffle. First prize is one year’s membership for two adults in the Kingfisher Leisure Club, valued €1,000; second prize is holiday vouchers, valued €600; and third prize is two All-Ireland football tickets. The draw will take place in the oyster festival marquee on Friday September 10. Tickets €5 each or book of five for €20. Tickets can be purchased from all club officers.

Now with the Races behind us, plans for the 2010 Clarinbridge Oyster Festival are underway with many ladies preparing to show off the glamour and maintain the west’s reputation for style.

The village of Clarenbridge has long garnered national and international acclaim for its annual Oyster Festival. The event, now in its 56th year, is very much part of local heritage and this year’s event in September will provide an excellent weekend for festival goers.

This year’s Clarenbridge Oyster Festival was launched officially in the village last weekend when it was announced that the festival will be an official stopover for the annual cross-country drive, the Cannonball Run.

This is the title of the best book ever written about our famous Irish oysters. It was launched in 2004 and immediately won a very coveted prize at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. In 2005 it was named Food Book of the Year by Food and Wine magazine. So why do I bring this to your attention? The reason is simple, I met the author Máirín Uí Chomáin recently and after a brief conversation I realised that she had written an Irish cookery book which I had been unaware of — shame on me.

There certainly is a lot going on in terms of entertainment in Galway city. We already enjoyed April’s Cúirt Literature Festival, June’s Galway Film Fleadh, and the Galway Arts Festival. All of those attracted great crowds and made those attending experience unforgettable moments. We can now enjoy lasting a full week Galway Races in Ballybrit. There is no need to introduce anyone to this splendid event.
