AS THE curtain comes down on one year, the Town Hall is already raising it for the New Year with the release of its programme details from January to March 2009. It’s a packed schedule of quality theatre, music, dance, and comedy with much to look forward to.

Although I have never actually seen the original of The Day The Earth Stood Still, word has it that the remake, which is in theatres now, could have been worse, but that it also could have been a lot better. Robert Wise's 1951 original, based on the Harry Bates short story Farewell to the Master, saw a lone spaceship landed in President’s Park in Washington, DC on “a mission of goodwill”. It was ground-breaking in its day and in that era of curiosity, became an instant classic. In the remake, a massive futuristic globe (kudos go out to the computer-generated techies who worked on this version of the film) descends upon New York's Central Park and out pops a representative of an alien race named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) and his trusty sidekick robot, an Oscar-esque titanium figure who is eventually given the acronym name GORT (Genetically Organised Robotic Technology). Immediately we know we’re about to embark on a film that, having long surpassed its sell-out date in the believability department, can only be described as cheesy.

Last week I asked restaurants to send me an e-mail about any special offers or particularly good value meals available. Coincidentally there were some offers advertised in the same issue and I will list below what is available.

Irish smoked salmon is without doubt one of the world’s great foods. Being the most westerly country in Europe gives Ireland the perfect environment for producing this versatile delicacy. Salmon has been smoked for centuries in Ireland using methods and secrets which have been passed down through the generations. The texture and taste of Irish smoked salmon is particularly good due to that extra bit of work the king of fish has to put in around our rugged and unpolluted west coast. Smoked salmon is rightfully considered an expensive food, but when used as an addition to pasta the smoked flavour carries brilliantly. This means that a small amount of salmon can go a long way. Another great benefit to eating smoked salmon is the fact that the oils of the salmon which are high in omega 3 remain very well preserved. Coupled with a healthy selection of spring leaves, this dish makes a well balanced main meal of the day.

The Mayo League will see the curtain come down on another season this Sunday (bar one or two re-fixed games), with a number of titles and promotion spots still up for grabs. In the Super League Ballina Town have their destiny in their own hands and on Sunday at 2.30pm on the Pete Murray pitch in Belleek Park, they can wrap up the title with a win over Fahy Rovers. Ballina Town have been leading the charge over the 17 games so far this season, with Westport United nipping at their heels. A win for Brendan Kenny’s side will see them reach 44 points, enough to claim the title as Westport can only reach a maximum of 43 with their two games left this season. They play Iorras Aontaithe this Sunday and have a re-fixed game against Snugboro United also to play, but if Kenny’s men do what is expected of them Westport’s re-fixed game will be inconsequential to the title race.
