Taoiseach Enda Kenny on Saturday, announced the creation of 20 new jobs and a €6 million investment in the Marine Institute's facility in Newport.  The 20 new positions will be based at the Marine Institute, Newport, where they will be engaged on a number of research projects funded from a secured pot of €6 million in research grants from a number of agencies including Science Foundation Ireland, Interreg, EU H2020/European Research Council, European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the British Research Council.

The Galway Greenway Group which is campaigning for a greenway route which is fair to landowners, walkers and cyclists, has asked the public to make their feeling known before tomorrow’s (Friday) deadline for the receipt of submissions.

Last night at The Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin 4, Muintir Mhaigh Eo Atha Cliath announced the award winners for the Mayo Person of the Year, Meitheal, and Young Mayo Person of the Year for 2017.

Mayo saw higher mean temperatures and lower total rainfall in 2016 compared to 2015 according to the records from Met Eireann's four weather stations in the county. The warmest mean monthly temperature recorded in the county was in Newport in August at 15.5 degrees, with the Claremorris station recording a monthly mean high temperature of 15.1 degrees in August also, while in the same month Knock Airport recorded a monthly mean year high of 14.4 degrees with Belmullet's station recording its monthly mean high for the year of 14.6 degrees in June.

The finalists in the SFA National Small Business Awards 2017 have been officially announced by Patricia Callan, SFA director. The aim of the awards is to celebrate the achievements of small businesses in Ireland, and to recognise the vital contribution of the small business sector to Irish industry. Thirty five companies have been selected as finalists, from 13 different counties, across eight categories with two coming from Mayo. 

The British-Irish agreement of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) came into force on this day in 1999. After two years of protracted talks, the GFA of 1998 had finally achieved a binding consensus among political rivals in Northern Ireland that had not been achieved, or even attempted on such a scale, before. The GFA was more inclusive than previous political agreements in that its negotiating body, the Northern Ireland Forum, was open to all parties, nationalist, unionist, republican, loyalist and centre. The GFA was formally agreed by the Irish and British governments and participating parties on April 10 1998. Under the agreement, the governments committed to putting the settlement to the people of the Republic and Northern Ireland in referendums to be held on May 22 of that year. 

The stars are aligned for astronomers, astro-photographers, astro-physicists, stargazers, and rocket makers to visit Newport over the Bank holiday weekend, October 28 to 30. The town is set to host the first Mayo Dark Sky Festival and it promises to be a weekend of discovery and enlightenment for everyone.

Four games spread across three venues will determine the future of eight sides all looking to be the one to claim the Mayo Intermediate Championship and book their place with the big boys in the senior event next summer. The last few games that had to be tidied up in the group stages took place last weekend and Kiltimagh, Westport, Belmullet, and Islandeady topped their groups, with Moy Davitts, Burrishoole, The Neale, and Shrule Glenncorrib joining them at the quarter final stage as runners up.

Saturday September 24 saw the first duathlon race take place in Newport, and what a race it was.

Michael Ring, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, on Monday turned the sod and laid a brick on the new Mulranny Activity and Tourism Information Centre.
