Mayo is to become a focal point of cycling interest this summer when the An Post Rás comes to the county, with two stages finishing in Mayo, one in Newport and the other in Ballina. When Rory Staunton died from sepsis at age 12 years in April, 2012 he left behind a huge grieving family in Mayo. Cousins, who Rory considered some of his best friends, gathered to mourn the passing of a loving young boy who always brought a smile to everyone’s face. Rory was intensely proud of his family and he and his little sister Kathleen looked forward every year to spending their summers in Mayo. He stayed in Knappagh, Westport, and loved day trips to Thallabawn Beach near Louisburgh with most of his cousins, and visits to his cousins in Glenhest, Newport, Castlebar and Kiltimagh.

The application by a single company, BioAtlantis Teo, for exclusive rights to cut and harvest seaweed in Clew Bay has sparked major fears among local farmers who have traditionally cut seaweed in the area. Such has been the concern to the application for 10 year exclusive rights lodged by BioAtlantis Teo a new community group the Clew Bay Seaweed Association was formed recently.

Ring welcomes further approval for works at Rossow Bends

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring this week warmly welcomed the announcement by the National Roads Authority that further road works will take place on the N59 Rossow Bends at Kilmeena, Westport. The N59 Rossow Bends scheme, between Newport and Westport, is 1.8km in length and continues from the N59 Kilbride Scheme which was completed 2012. The Rossow Bends section is part of the overall N59 Westport to Mulranny Road Improvement Scheme.

Connacht Cyclo Cross league round 2 Castlebar

Round two of the cyclo cross league was held at the grounds surrounding Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, the beautiful setting with Croagh Patrick as a backdrop was a hilly technical affair. Experience was the key and the results were dominated by riders from outside the province, with Tim O Regan, DID Dunboyne, and Peter O Farrel,l Wheelworx Dublin, having a fierce battle that was only sorted out on the penultimate lap. The 1.2k lap had to be negotiated 14 times with many riders taking a spill or two on the off camber sections.
