There can only be two reasons why music highbrows are still a bit ‘iffy’ about the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. One is probably a comment on his unusual route into classical music. A talented music scholar from Cardiff University and the Royal Academy London, he founded a jazz group Nucleus, which won first prize in the Montreux Jazz Festival. Then to keep bread on the table, he made a series of TV advertising jingles. One of them, called ‘got off the ground’, was for an airline. But it became so popular and catchy, that people were clogging the airline’s phones demanding what was that amazing music. Jenkins developed the theme and, extending its African and Arabic sounds, it became the energetic Adiemus. It topped the pop charts across the world.

Castlebar Concert Band presents Big Band Boogies on Thursday March 5 at the Linenhall, Castlebar. The band will play a selection of lively marches, jazz, rock, and light classical music. The Castlebar Concert Band convenes for practice on Tuesday evenings in St Patrick’s NS Hall under the direction of Debbie Clarke. Debbie is an experienced musician and has attended several courses and workshop to fine-tune her skills as a conductor. The concert band has been existence for several decades and its musicians perform with lively energy and skill. A great evening of music and entertainment is expected.

The WhistleBlast Quartet – Ken Edge (saxophones and clarinet), Mary Curran (French horn), Sile Daly (oboe and cor Anglais) and Andrew Synnott (piano), as recently seen on RTE’s Nationwide programme, is continuing its series of three-day projects with a visit to Knockrooskey National School, Westport. At the end of the schools workshop/performances the Quartet will perform a short family recital for all the community on Friday May 8 at 6pm in the new Westport Lodge Hotel, Aughagower. The hotel will offer special reductions for meals at this event for those who wish to extend their evening out. The concert is free to the public and will include Faure’s ‘Sicilienne’, the theme from The Simpsons, and music by Tchaikovsky, Lucia Berio, and Stravinsky.

Irish classical guitarist Redmond O’Toole will perform an afternoon concert at 3pm on Sunday October 25 in St Thomas’ Church in Dugort, Achill. This acclaimed musician is one of a handful of performers in the world to play a Brahms guitar, an eight-string guitar played in the position of a cello. Mayo audiences have seen Redmond recently in the Westport Arts Festival and Killala Arts Festival and last July he performed to a full house in St Thomas’ on Achill.
