All of the nine elected members of Ballina Town Council were seriously critical of all the different route options for linking the N26 out of Foxford to the N5 on to Dublin that are under consideration at present, at the April meeting of the council on Wednesday night. They were so critical that Fine Gael councillor Mark Winters proposed that Ballina Town Council reject all of the route options, which was seconded by independent councillor Gerry Ginty. Paul Hyland, senior executive engineer in the Mayo national roads design office, gave the council a presentation on the various number of routes that are under consideration. The routes will link up with the N5 at any one of a number of potential junctions between Turlough and Bohola.

An Port Mór in Westport has been crowned winner of Best Restaurant in Mayo at the Connacht regional final of the Santa Rita Irish Restaurant Awards 2013. The awards, which took place in The House Hotel in Galway this week named the top restaurants in Connacht for 2013.

With the Super League done and dusted for a while now, the race to make it into the top division next season is where all eyes will be this Sunday. With three games to go Conn Rangers are top on 24 points, with Ballyheane and Snugboro right behind them on 23 points. This weekend Conn Rangers will host Bangor Hibs in Mount Falcon, but in their final two games they will have to face both of the sides right behind them. The mid-season break in action in the Mayo League due to the European Championships is well and truly over this weekend with a full round of action across all divisions. Last weekend saw sides return to cup competitions in the Connacht Gold Cup, Connacht Gold Shield, and another number of catch up league games over the divisions. With six rounds down out of the 14 of the league campaign, Westport United are streaking out in front at the top of the table and are 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals. Ballina Town, Castlebar Celtic, and Claremorris are all on eight points chasing the Connacht Junior Cup winners who have 18 points from their opening six games.

Deputy Michelle Mulherin has revealed that she has received “shocking news” from the National Roads Authority that it “no longer considers the N26 Phase 2 a potential project”.

The issue of the upgrading of the N26 is to be kept to the forefront of the local issues according to the members of the Ballina Electoral Area committee this week.

“I’ll leave no stone unturned, we want the N26,” Fine Gael councillor Eddie Staunton said this week. “It’s our turn now, you only have to look at the likes of the roads they have got in Cork and Kerry.”

I recently had a very enjoyable and informative evening at Mount Falcon in Ballina. The head chef, Philippe Farineau has started a series of dinners where he cooks each course in front of all the guests and meanwhile the main kitchen is preparing the same items for serving just as he finishes the talk and demonstration. I was not sure how this would work in reality; however, I can now say that it was an experience worth recommending to everyone who likes good food. Philippe has a great passion for cooking and the dishes he chooses are well within the capability of any amateur cook. There was a champagne reception and I really have to compliment Mount Falcon as it is one of the very few “champagne receptions” that I have attended where they actually serve champagne, nicely chilled bottles of Tattinger were awaiting us as we arrived for the meal.
