Iorras reach the next round while Celtic and Westport crash out

Iorras Aontaithe were the only Mayo winners in last weekend’s Connacht Cup action. The north Mayo men booked their place in round six of the competition with a 3-1 win over fellow Mayo League side Conn Rangers in Carnenash. Iorras took the lead early in the second half through a Brendan Nallen freekick. The Mount Falcon men pulled themselves level just after the 65 minute mark when Shane Maughan found the back of the net. However the homeside went back into the lead around 10 minutes before the end when Jason Boylan pounced, and the win was made safe not long after when Peter Murphy grabbed their third goal.

Tight battle expected in Sunday showdown

After 13 games in the Welcome Inn Hotel Premier A Division, they cannot be separated on points, but come Sunday either Conn Rangers or Swinford FC will be heading home with a piece of silverware for the winter when they meet in the Westaro Cup final. Both sides are competing in one of the tightest league races seen in recent years as they battle for the title promotion to the Elverys Sports Super League with Westport United B (who even if they win the league cannot get promoted) and Ballyglass. The current league table has Westport out in front with 29 points, the three other sides locked together on 28 points with five games to go in the league.

While most eyes last weekend were on Westport United’s big game in Lecarrow in the Connacht Junior Cup, there were still three rounds of games in the Elverys Sports Super League. Ballina Town made it three wins from three with a 7-2 win over Claremorris at home. That is 19 goals scored in three games by the north Mayo men, who are laying down a serious assault on this year’s title. Their goals came from a David O’Mahony hat-trick with Barry Higgins, Daniel Gorman, Pat Duffy, and Ben McGarry all chipping in with goals.

Mulherin urges caution on Ballina Town Councillors following N26 knockback

Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has cautioned the elected members of Ballina Town Council on its decision to dismiss out of hand the work of the Road Design Office at Mayo County Council in finding an alternative route for the N26. Dep Mulherin said this week: “It must be remembered that up until the decision of An Bord Pleanála to refuse to confirm the CPO on the N26 Stage 2 (Mount Falcon to Bohola Road) in February 2010 the construction of that road was a priority for the county. Mayo County Council and all stakeholders were sent back to the drawing board to find an alternative route for the road. Except that was not possible for some time because, despite promises of support to address the predicament given by the previous government, no funding whatsoever was allocated to allow the council to begin the work of assessing and addressing the concerns of An Bord Pleanála and funding a new route. In effect the project was confined to the scrapheap under Fianna Fail.”
