Westmeath Rural Arts are launching a film club in Sonna Hall on Friday May 7 at 8pm with the showing of a selection of films with Westmeath connections. The feature film for this first Film Friday will be The First Great Train Robbery (1979), directed by Michael Crichton and starring Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland, a significant part of which was filmed in Westmeath.

The Stars of our Bars Westmeath county final was held in the Annebrook House Hotel, Mullingar last Thursday, April 22. The event saw 10 acts from six different venues across Westmeath perform their best to win the judges over for their chance to get to the regional final, as well as compete for cash prizes of €1,000 for first place, €500 for second, and €250 for third.

Pat Flanagan may have dominated the headlines last week after being appointed as interim Westmeath manager, but this week it’s a different Flanagan that will be on the minds of the football fraternity of Westmeath as the race for this year’s Flanagan Cup gets under way in earnest. Maryland and Kinnegad kicked off this year’s action in Moate last Sunday but the remaining five games are down for decision this weekend. The intermediate championship also kicks off this weekend.
