Killererin v Mícheál Breathnachs

Corofin have won the Connacht club title five times since 1991, and they reached another Connacht club final last Sunday afternoon when they recovered from a disastrous start to narrowly defeat Mayo champion’s Ballintubber at MacHale Park, Castlebar.

Corofin have been the most consistent club side at senior level in Galway football for the past 20 years. They have won the Frank Fox Cup on 10 occasions since 1991 and they will be hoping to continue that rich winning vein when they play Salthill, Mountbellew/Moylough or Tuam Stars in the 2011 final. Despite the backlog of games, the final is still pencilled in for October 23.

The replay of the county football quarter-final between Claregalway and Corofin took place on Saturday evening in Tuam Stadium with last year’s beaten finalists Corofin advancing on a 1-15 to 1-10 score-line.

Claregalway and Corofin will meet again this Saturday (6.15pm) in the replay of their county senior quarter-final.

Following a hectic weekend of football action last Saturday and Sunday, three of the county football quarter-finals are down for decision this Sunday. There is a double header in Pearse Stadium with Carraroe taking on Milltown at 3.45pm and Salthill/Knocknacarra facing Moycullen at 5.30pm. Claregalway, who saw off NUIG last weekend, take on championship favourites Corofin in Tuam at 5.30pm. The outstanding quarter-final between Tuam Stars and either Cortoon Shamrocks or Mountbellew/Moylough and Micheal Breathnachs could not be fixed due to the ongoing shenanigans with Mountbellew/Moylough’s appeal.

There were 10 championship games in the county football championship last weekend with all 20 senior clubs in action. Unusually with that many games down for decision, there were no draws and the winning teams now advance to round three.

The Galway senior footballers start their 2010 Connacht football championship campaign away to New York this weekend. The game is fixed for 4pm (local time) in Gaelic Park and will be refereed by Maurice Condon.

Corofin have been down this road a few times before, and they will know they face a stiff test against Antrim champions St Gall’s on Sunday at Parnell Park (2.30pm) if they are to advance to the All-Ireland club final on St Patrick’s Day.
