The chief executive of Mayo County Council said this week that he was "hopeful you would see a positive result" for the examinership process that the Mayo Renewable Power project is currently undergoing. This summer the High Court appointed Michael McAteer of Grant Thornton as interim examiner to Mayo Renewable Power, which had planned to build a wood-chip burning electricity generator at Killala at a cost of €180 million.
Flood relief work that is needed to ensure that Crossmolina does not face the same fate as it did last winter could be years off, according to some local councillors, following a presentation of potential solutions to the issue. The elected members of the Ballina Municipal District approved the payment of €10,000 to fund the continuation of the Mayo North Promotions Office for a period of three months. The office was set up two years ago, for a two year trial basis which ended at the end of December. The council management are now reviewing the performance of the office over the past two years and director of services, Joe Loftus, said he expects the review to be completed by the end of March this year.
Towns in Mayo were this morning counting the cost of the damage cause by flooding after storm Desmond caused lashed the county over the weekend. Crossmolina was particularly badly hit by the storm with the River Deel bursting it’s banks and flooding the town.
