Ballina Family Resource Centre is currently providing a facility for Mayo Cancer Support Association Outreach Services to run a support service in Ballina. This is available every Tuesday morning in Ballina FRC. This facility can be used by cancer patients and members of their family.

Taoiseach welcomes Irish-US funding for Mayo schools

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed funding from the Irish American Partnership for five Mayo primary schools totalling $7,500. The five schools are all in the parish of Islandeady; namely Cornanool, Cloggernagh, Cogaula, Glenisland, and Leitir. They each received $1,500 as a gift from the Irish American Partnership as part of its Rural Primary School Library Programme. The gift was announced by the Irish American Partnership during a recent visit by the Taoiseach to Boston while attending one of its events. The funding programme is intended to increase the size of the libraries in the schools.

Mayo Library is holding sales of old books in their Castlebar and Ballina branches for the next three weeks.

Up to three thousand expected to march in Mayo Save Our Schools campaign

Up to 3,000 representatives from small schools across Mayo are expected to march to the Castlebar constituency office of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny on February 25 next, where they will hand deliver a letter of petition calling for the reversal of retrospective Budget cuts to education, in particular those affecting small schools.

Mayo joins forces with Manchester in tourism promotion drive

Mayo and Manchester have joined forces to promote tourism in the west of Ireland. The marketing team behind Mayo County Council’s diaspora website: www.mayo.ie have joined forces with Lawrence Hennigan from the Manchester Mayo Tourism and Business group, and the marketing manager of www.manchesteririshfestival.co.uk. Hennigan, whose parents come from Attymass parish, just outside Ballina, said: “We are staging a Manchester-Mayo weekend to officially launch our group at the festival, and a whole series of Mayo events will be taking place to promote all things Mayo in Manchester.”

Kenny named Mayo Person of the Year

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny was announced as the Muintir Mhaigh Eo Mayo Person of the Year yesterdat at a reception in the Burlington Hotel in Dublin. The Muintir Mhaigheo Dublin Association has been running since 1905 and the Mayo Person of the Year has been awarded to a number of notable Mayo sons and daughters, including former president Mary Robinson and former taoiseach Charles J Haughey. Last year’s winner was Castlebar hotelier Pat Jennings.

Golds for Ballina AC and Mayo AC at national masters indoor championships

Last Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Masters Indoor Championships, Mayo AC came home with number of medals split between two athletes. In the female over 45 section, Ann Murray won a gold medal in the 3,000 metres and a bronze in the 400 metres. In the men’s over 55 section, Patrick Moran won the gold in the high jump event and took a bronze in the long jump.
