Although it is only round three of the National league on Sunday when Mayo take on Kerry, it literally is a league defining match (There will be more on rounds of a different kind later on). The winners of the game have a chance of making the semi-finals; the losers are staring relegation in the face. Mayo have had some good results against Kerry in the league in the last number of years and no question they will not fear them particularly with Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper sidelined for the year . It is sad for us as footballing fans that we will not see the eight-time All-Star in action this year however I am sure there are many a manager and defender quietly delighted they will not have to endure the full wrath of his skills in the summer of 2014. Cooper’s last championship game, last year’s All-Ireland semifinal against the Dubs, was arguably one of his best in a Kerry jersey. I was secretly hoping Kerry would win that game as I felt Mayo would have had a better chance against them in the final. Kerry are under transition at the moment and very regularly line out with players we have not really heard of just yet, so now is a good time to play them.

Castlebar CC’s Karl Benson added the Mayo cycling league to his list of wins, the young sprinter won three of the nine rounds, beating some experienced seniors on the way, the league itself was a real hot bed for recruiting talent with quite a few new finds. The hill climb win by Con Doherty (Westport) on the last round with Cale Coen (Castlebar) second and fourth placed Sean Flynn (Westport) in the same event highlight the talent coming through the ranks.

As of Wednesday night, there are no new major injury concerns for Mayo according to James Horan. The Mayo manager met the assembled local and national press corps in Breaffy House and when quizzed on the injury front the Ballintubber man said that, “I don’t think there’s anything new since I talked to you last. Some of the guys who were out injured are making good progress.” The two main injury concerns coming out of the last two games, Michael Conroy and Tom Cunniffe, were coming along well according to Horan on Wednesday night. “Mickey [Conroy] trained last night and played very well so he’s back up and running, so we’re delighted with that.” On Cunniffe, who twinged a hamstring, the Mayo boss said: “He’s making good progress, the medical team are working very hard with him. He’s not back training yet, but he’s very close to it. Some of these are seven to 10 day ones and you’ve to see how they pan out.”
