The board’s function is to oversee the workings of the Sports Partnership and comprises 19 representatives from local agencies, community, and sporting organisations within the county.

Mayo Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien recently dismissed the idea of a greenway along the northern section of the Western Rail Corridor line, north of Claremorris, as “short term gain” and “ad-hockery”. I am not sure what he meant by this term, but the Sligo Mayo Greenway campaign says the idea should not be dismissed flippantly and needs to be examined as a realistic alternative to any proposed railway in the current climate.

Mayo county manager Peter Hynes told the July meeting of the council this week that the polluter pays principle is not sustainable at the current time. Mr Hynes was responding to a question from Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway Walsh about the possibility of any major project coming on stream in Mayo, such as the Belmullet sewerage scheme, with the expected reduction in the councils capital budget next year, and the polluter pays principle contribution the council would have to make.

The steering committee set up to draft the Strategic Action Plan for Mayo GAA have disassociated themselves from the final draft plan which was released by the County Board this week. In a strongly worded statement from the steering committee chairman, Liam Horan, released on Monday, May 16 the committee hit out at the official draft plan.
