Mayo jobs to be affected by First Active closure

Two Mayo First Active branches, in Ballina and Castlebar, are to be closed following the announcement this week that First Active and Ulster Bank are to merge. It is expected that up to 12 staff from the two branches will be redeployed to work in local Ulster Bank branches. There are six Ulster Banks in Mayo; in Castlebar, Ballina, Westport, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, and Ballyhaunis, but staff won’t know where they will be reassigned until a voluntary redundancy scheme has been completed.

Last place up for grabs in Intermediate last eight

image preview

Swinford made their way into quarter finals of the Mayo intermediate championship last weekend thanks to a 1-11 to 1-6 win over Davitts in Ballyhaunis. The east Mayo men became the seventh team into the last eight, with one spot left up for grabs in the competition. On Sunday in Bonniconlon Davitts will get their second bite at the cherry when they take on Belmullet in a winner takes all clash at 2pm. The play-off was necessitated by all three sides finishing level on points in their group and one game in the group not being played, and a walk over handed to Belmullet, so points difference couldn’t be taken into consideration.

The first of the major adult county titles will be given out on Saturday when Tooreen host Ballyhaunis in the Mayo Senior Hurling Championship final, with the TJ Tyrell Cup at stake. The men in red and black have been the premier force in Mayo hurling for the last decade, picking up their fifth title in seven years last year with a 0-15 to 2-7 win over their opponents. The last time Tooreen won the county title was back in 2003 and since then they have been on the coat tails of their neighbours.

Ardnaree and Kiltimagh look to move up

If you go by tradition alone then Kiltimagh will go into Sunday’s county junior final as hot favourites, but that won’t bother Ardnaree. If you follow that logic then Ardnaree have it all to gain and nothing to loose, but somehow you can’t imagine that they see that they have nothing to lose. The prize of a place in next year’s intermediate championship and the chance to winter the junior crown in their town is something that will make sure both sides leave everything on the field in McHale Park on Sunday.

Ballyhaunis to step into the unknown

image preview

With the season coming to an end, there is a serious rush to squeeze in games that have to be played into a short time period and any small diversion off course can lead to problems. Ballyhaunis overcame Four Roads from Roscommon in the Connacht semi-final a couple of weeks ago and eagerly awaited their Connacht final showdown with the Galway champions. However a spanner was thrown in the works last weekend when Mellick Eyrecourt and Tynagh-Abbey Duniry drew in the Galway intermediate final. Both sides have to meet again this Saturday in the replay and then the winners turn out again the following day against Ballyhaunis in the Connacht final in Athleague at 2pm.

Mayo derbies welcome back sides after holiday break

The New Year has come and with it the Connacht junior league enters its final furlong as the chase for a top four place and avoiding relegation intensifies. With the competition in hibernation since the middle of December, there will be a warm welcoming return to the fold for the Mayo sides in the competition this weekend in Division 1A with two Mayo derbies topping the billing for Mayo attention.

Connacht Junior Cup Junior cup weekend ahead weather permitting

So the snow and ice seems to have finally left us and depending on the weather over the weekend, the three remaining Mayo clubs left in the competition will go looking to make it past the first round proper. Ballinrobe, Ballyhaunis, and Westport all bowed out of the cup at the preliminary stage before Christmas. So Ballina, Castlebar, and border club Corrib are all left in the competition with a shout.
