One of the principal roles in the musical On a Wing and a Prayer will herald a welcome return to the stage by Leitrim-born Cynthia Clampett who will play Dame Judy Coyne. Mrs Coyne and her husband, Judge Liam Coyne, were instrumental in reviving interest in Knock Shrine, and she founded the handmaids and stewards, provided facilities for the sick, and had a broad vision for the development of the Shrine. She was also responsible for commissioning the statues at the apparition gable in Knock. She died in 2002.

Le Chéile Family Resource Centre, Tucker Street, Castlebar, will hold a coffee morning in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation on September 16 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Currently on show in the gallery of the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar is Meadowsweet: A Retrospective, an exhibition that brings together the work of artist Ger Mayock who died in May 2006. Mayock grew up in Ross West, near Castlebar, and his childhood experiences of traditional Irish music and culture went on to inform and inspire a body of work including sculpture, writing, film, music composition, and photography. A close bond with wood and stone dominated Mayock’s work during the final years of his life and he produced a very significant body of sculpture, much of which is on view at this retrospective exhibition. In Mayock’s own words, “The carvings that I make are capturing a moment, be it from a dream or a reality, like an image or, more accurately, a state of mind we have all known from a day or from a lifetime, common to us all and unique to each one of us”. The exhibition also includes Ger Mayock's writings, photography, and his short film War. The exhibition runs until Saturday July 3.

The Carramore 10k is the first race in Mayo AC's 2009 Road Race League, which is sponsored by Vodafone C & C Cellular and supported by Mayo Sports Partnership.

The Carramore 10k is the first race in Mayo AC's 2009 Road Race League, which is sponsored by Vodafone C & C Cellular and supported by Mayo Sports Partnership. The race is on tomorrow at 6pm. This will the first chance for participants to pick up league points in what promises to be a very competitive league this year. The Carramore 10k is a firm favourite on the western athletics calendar and is now in its sixth year of the race. The course is a fast, one lap, rural circuit which will test all athletes. There is a good community spirit and there has been lots of local help in support of the main organiser Christy Heneghan, who has been involved in athletics since the 1970s. Once again the race is supported by local business people PJ and Helena O'Connor. This race has a strong fund-raising tradition. The main charity this year is the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. To date the event has raised €46,000 for its palliative care service.

The Baxter International Foundation has donated US$230,000 to Hope House in County Mayo and The Irish Hospice Foundation in Dublin.
