Mayo make light work of Sligo challenge in U17 opener

image preview

The Mayo U17 team breezed through to the next round of the first ever Connacht u17 championship with a 16 point win over Sligo in MacHale Park on Sunday lunchtime. Mayo Gaels man James Jennings stared for Martin McIntyre’s men hitting seven points in an impressive display by the corner forward. Also putting in a staring role was Westport’s Pat Lambert who hit 2-2 from wing forward, his second goal in injury time putting the final stamp on the game.

Looking to follow in Westport’s footsteps

After Westport going all the way to glory at All Ireland level in this grade in the spring, there is plenty of inspiration for the 16 sides in the mix for this year's intermediate championship. In group one the Belmullet, Ardnaree, Ballyhaunis and Parke are involved in a fascinating four way tussle for progression to the next round. On Sunday, Belmullet and Ardnaree will meet in Erris, while Pake will travel to east Mayo. While there won't be too much between these sides, Belmullet and Ballyhaunis should come out on top.

Mayo new boys learn some lessons

It’s unlikely that you’ll ever see this combination of Mayo players ever line out together again for a competitive fixture, but it gave a number of players a taste of what it’s like in the big leagues they’ll not forget and some others who have serious designs on being around there for a long time plenty to work on.

No quarter given this weekend

Four games spread across three venues will determine the future of eight sides all looking to be the one to claim the Mayo Intermediate Championship and book their place with the big boys in the senior event next summer. The last few games that had to be tidied up in the group stages took place last weekend and Kiltimagh, Westport, Belmullet, and Islandeady topped their groups, with Moy Davitts, Burrishoole, The Neale, and Shrule Glenncorrib joining them at the quarter final stage as runners up.

Draws set up some mouth watering encounters

The focus of all the GAA clubs in Mayo was sharpened this week when the draw for the senior, intermediate and junior football championships were made in MacHale Park. In the senior championship the defending champions Castlebar Mitchels were pitted in a group with two of the heavy hitters from the recent past with Ballina Stephenites and Crossmolina Deel Rovers in the pool with them. Joining those three sides are Ballinrobe who'll fancy their chances of turning over at least one of the former giants.
