The Fiontar Chomhraic Teo Fund, the €3 million investment fund established by the ESB following the closure of Bellacorick Power Station in 2005, is open for business with the first call for proposals for projects for the north Mayo area.

Mayo County Council has signed up for the National Gum Litter Taskforce Campaign for the first time and launched the campaign in partnership with Castlebar Town Council in Castlebar last Friday. Mayo County Council now joins 29 other councils in the joint initiative between the Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government and the chewing gum industry.

Mayo County Council will host an awards night on Thursday November 5 in Áras an Chontae, Castlebar, to celebrate the excellent standards attained and the progress achieved by both the local authority abattoirs and small meat manufacturing premises that are under the regulatory remit of the council.

A joint policing committee has been established for the Castlebar town area which includes three people to represent community and voluntary organisations in the town. The county continues to cope with dealing with the severe cold snap — many householders continue to remain isolated; without water as pipes have burst, and struggle to get to work as roads remain hazardous. The forecast for the rest of the week predicts further prolonged cold spells, with road temperatures below zero, snow, ice, and wintry showers — making it the most prolonged cold spell in Ireland since 1963.
