Mayo business owners are celebrating the generation of €2.5 million worth of business thanks to effective networking. The Mayo BNI group, which is made up of 14 local business people, work together not only to build their own businesses but also the local economy. The networking group supports more than 65 jobs locally, with this set to grow in the coming months with new business wins among members.

The Irish Traditional Italian Chippers Association (ITICA) and local Westmeath members Alfredo’s Take Away in Athlone, Roma Cafe in Mullingar, and Macari’s Cafe in Kinnegad, have announced a nationwide search for its 2014 brand ambassador.

It certainly has been an action-packed if somewhat confusing week on the football front in Westmeath. In a typical case of Murphy’s law a bizarre set of results left three teams: Garrycastle, Tyrrellspass, and Castledaly, all on six points fighting for two knockout places in section B.

The heat is certainly on this weekend as a number of clubs face make or break games in the Westmeath senior football championship. With the exception of the two Mullingar sides who are already safely through to the semi-final, every other club has something to play for this weekend. For some, like Athlone and Castledaly, a win is simply a must if they are to maintain their interest in this year’s championship beyond this weekend. For others like Maryland, C/F/C/W, Killucan, and Kinnegad a win is a necessity if they are to avoid a dreaded relegation battle.

Things have become a lot clearer after round four of the Westmeath football championship as the race for a place in the business end of the championship hots up. The two Mullingar sides continue to set the pace and remain unbeaten. Regardless of the result of their final outing Shamrocks and St Loman’s are already assured of a semi-final spot.

There is plenty at stake as round four of the Westmeath senior football championship takes place this weekend. St Loman’s and Shamrocks can all but secure their place in the automatic semi-final spots with wins over Coralstown/Kinnegad and C/F/C/W respectively.

As part of the In Humbert’s Footsteps Gathering Event, the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar is delighted to present ’98 Recalled, a unique and fascinating exhibition of distinctive and previously unseen artefacts (many from private collections) and associated information pertaining to the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland, and French General Humbert’s expedition in particular. The collection of artefacts includes a selection of 1798 pikeheads, a French bayonet discovered at site of Battle of Ballinamuck, and the hat and sword belonging to French Captain Truc (who was appointed Town Commander of Ballina by General Humbert). The exhibition is presented in association with the In Humbert’s Footsteps Gathering Event Castlebar Committee. The exhibition, which takes place in the Linenhall’s Theatre space, runs until Saturday, August 24.

As expected there were few surprise results in round three of the Westmeath senior football championship which took place last weekend. Bunbrosna’s defeat of Maryland was perhaps the only real ‘upset’.

Round three of the Westmeath senior football championship takes place this weekend and there are few if any certainties in what should be an interesting selection of games. The Downs, Garrycastle, Castledaly, Maryland, Shamrocks, and St Loman’s have each been given the favourites tag ahead of their respective games and while they may all oblige, with question marks hanging over most teams, I expect a few upsets over the weekend.
