Victory for Galway desert runners

Three Galway athletes claimed victory at this year’s Gobi Desert ultra marathon. After struggling through soaring desert heat and against 128 competitors from around the world, Diana Hogan Murphy from Athenry took first place in the women’s race, Shirley Potter from Portumna was the second woman across the line, and Shane O’Rourke also from Portumna came fifth overall and first in his age group.

Big turn out for Claremorris road race

It had been quite a while since Mayo AC did not have a finisher in the top three of a Road Race League. This happened last Saturday in the fifth race in Mayo AC's 2009 Road Race League, sponsored by C & C Cellular, which took place in sunny conditions over a recognised testing course at Claremorris. The eighth DeCare International sponsored road race and walk started and finished in Main Street.

Next leg of Mayo AC road race league coming up fast

The Vodafone C& C Cellular Mayo AC Open Road League continues on Sunday October 11 with race seven of the nine race series. The Terry Fox four miler takes place at Ballina and is a one lap course starting and finishing near the track at Belleek Park. The Terry Fox run takes place annually at venues all over the world in support of the Terry Fox Foundation which raises funds for cancer research in memory of a brave young Canadian. The race will not have a prize fund as all money raised on the day will go towards the Terry Fox Foundation. The race starts at 3pm. Entries will be taken from 1.30pm at track clubhouse. Local man Michael Rice and his team of helpers have organised this race at Ballina for the past 17 years. Mayo AC is happy to support the great work done by Michael in his fund-raising effort. Family and friends of deceased publican to run Dublin City Marathon in his memory

The start of the 2009 Dublin Marathon will be particularly poignant for friends and relatives of the late Galwayman Dave Kelly.

Athlone athlete completes Amsterdam Marathon

The 34th Amsterdam Marathon took place on Sunday October 18. A group of 26 people from all over Ireland, including Barry Gilfillan from Athlone, made the journey to participate in the marathon event in aid of Special Olympics Ireland.

Mayo athletes do well at Dublin City Marathon

Mayo AC had 17 finishers in the Dublin City Marathon, three first time marathoners, many improved times, and all enjoyed the tremendous atmosphere and fantastic Mayo support among the thousands lining the 26.2 mile route. TJ McHugh was the first Mayo AC finisher in a brilliant 2.38, and Tom Waldron brought the team home in an amazing 4.59 in his o70s category. The race incorporated the Irish Marathon Championships and results are being checked by AAI. A quick check of the overall results indicates that three Mayo AC athletes are in with chance of individual medals. The masters men's o35 and o50 teams will also be in the running.

Connemara Marathon sports a new sponsor

The famous Connemara International Marathon, often referred to as the Connemarathon, will take place on April 11 2010 with a new title sponsor, Ronhill, on board.

London calling all runners and walkers

Local heart charity Croí is looking for runners and walkers to join them for the London City Marathon in April next year!
