Cluid lambasted for lack of progress in Ballina estate

The lack of progress of any real note in the rejuvenation of St Patrick’s Estate in Ballina since the housing group took over control of the estate two years ago provoked widespread condemnation at the monthly meeting of Ballina Town Council on Wednesday night. The housing association gave the council a presentation on the work that was to be carried out in the rejuvenation of the estate over the coming months but before the presentation even began, the anger of the council members was demonstrated.

Loftus Recycling take points in Longford

Team Loftus Recycling picked up two valuable National League (Division 1) points with a hard-earned victory against PV Falcons, Longford in the Mall Complex, Longford, on Saturday night. This was an important game for both sides with the home side very anxious to record their first victory in the current league campaign and Ballina keen to get back on a winning track following a shock defeat to league débutantes, Lisburn 94s, the previous weekend in Ballina.

Changes in Leader Programme criticised

The recent announcement of over €12 million in funding under the Leader programme for the South West Development Company in Mayo was welcomed by members of the Westport Electoral Area Committe last Monday. However, committee members were informed that applications for future Leader programmes would be considered under a change in headings and that islands can’t apply any more—instead they will receive funding under a national islands programme.

Getting the most out of the FBD

Isn’t it a long season for our inter-county footballers when you consider they had their first match of the year last Sunday week, and some or most of them will be involved at either club or county level for another nine or 10 months. I know that the footballers who take their preparation seriously rarely take a week off, and during those two months of so called inactivity at the end of the year will undertake a maintenance programme so as to not lose their superior levels of fitness. It is very easy to pick these guys out if you attend early season matches as they are normally the players that catch the eye. Pat Kelly, Austin O’Malley, Alan Dillon, and Peadar Gardiner are players that spring to mind immediately when I think of players that live as close to a monastic lifestyle as is possible for young men these days. That is one of the primary reasons why they are right up there when it comes to selecting man of the match performances in the FBD league and early rounds of the National Football league.

A season of Sundays begins again

Time has ticked by very quickly since Mayo took their final bow in the championship for 2008 on a warm August Saturday in Croke Park, slipping out of the championship at the hands of the eventual winners, Tyrone, by a solitary point. And with Cormac Reilly’s final whistle that day attention turned to 2009 and the talk of the pubs and sidelines as to what went wrong over the past two years. Well one thing is for sure, John O’Mahony is still in the hot seat and will remain there for the next couple of years after being given a new deal in the autumn. Who will make up his side this Sunday and for the rest of the year will be talking points for the next few weeks as a side begins to take shape as the opening rounds of the National League slip by.
