Double whammy for Mayo towns as train route links in doubt

Both Ballina and Claremorris saw their hopes for improved rail connectivity dashed this week following revelations that long sought after new train links are no longer a priority. Ballina’s hopes for an early bird Dublin train service are no longer in the running after Irish Rail confirmed this week there are no plans to connect the north Mayo town with the early bird train service that currently runs from Westport each day at 5.15am, arriving in Dublin just before 9am.

Ballina to rename Pearse Street iStreet

The Ballina Town Council is to rename Pearse Street in the town to iStreet for a day as part of the town’s effort to win €50,000 worth of advertising in a competition a radio station is running. Fine Gael Councillor Mark Winters proposed the idea at the meeting of the town council on Wednesday night as the elected members discussed the renovations of the street which will be completed early next month. Cllr Winters told the meeting that “ iRadio are running a competition where they are giving away €50,000 worth of advertising for a town, where the best dressed shop with an iRadio theme would win €10,000 for themselves and another €40,000 for the promotion of the town. Winning a prize like this would be a huge boost for the town in promoting itself and the station is aimed at the 16 to 35-year-old market who are the big consumers of goods and services, and this kind of advertising could only be a boost to the town.” His proposal was seconded by Cllr Barry McLoughlin.

Ballina Town Council agrees to give Ballina Chamber €20,000 for promotion of town

The Ballina Town Council agreed to give Ballina Chamber €20,000 for the promotion of the town at the monthly meeting of the council this week, but the decision did lead to some heated debate in the council chamber. Ballina Chamber had initially made the application a number of months ago, but the decision was held off after some of the members of the council expressed their concerns that they would not be included in the decision of where the money would be spent, and requested the chamber to report back to them as to what exactly the €20,000 would be spent on. Before the debate began, Mayor Mary Kelly told the meeting that she believed that Cllr Mark Winters should excuse himself from the chamber for the item because he is the secretary of the chamber, Cllr Winters objected to this telling the meeting that he was there as a councillor and that his position in the chamber was a voluntary one, and he was not getting paid for his work with the chamber. Town clerk Carmel Murphy agreed that Cllr Winter would not have a conflict of interest as he was a member of a voluntary organisation and not a paid staff member.

Champions get defence off to an early start

A little bit earlier than some would have liked the Royal Theatre Senior Football Championship roars back into life for 2010 on Saturday evening. First up in the championship are the champions and the new kids on the block in the solitary five team group in Charlestown at 7pm on Saturday. West Mayo will bring the combined forces of Islandeady, Parke, Louisburgh, and Balla together under the guidance of Padraig Walsh to try to topple Ciaran McBrien’s men in the championship opener. Charlestown will go into the game as hot favourites, but they have been known to be slow starters in the championship, and this early outing could prove to be a tricky encounter if the amalgamated side manage to click on the field. Players like Ollie Feeney, Jarlath O’Malley, Peter Collins, Simon Cloherty, and Conor Walsh will be watched to show they have the class to make the step up from the junior ranks to senior football.

Ballina Chamber request for €20k of tourism budget angers Méara

A request by Ballina Chamber of Commerce for €20,000 worth of funding for a number of promotional projects for the town, from Ballina Town Council’s budget of €40,000 for tourism promotion, angered Ballina Méara, Cllr Mary Kelly this week. Town clerk Carmel Murphy outlined a request from the Chamber to the members of the town council for a number of projects the Chamber were looking to promote in the town over the coming year. The projects included the launch of the redeveloped Pearse Street, the promotion of the Jackie Clarke Library, the All-Ireland pipe band competition, a monthly e-zine with news and events from the town, and the continued promotion of Ballina as the salmon capital of Ireland.

Repairs to be made at Louisburgh Garda Station - Kenny

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has welcomed confirmation from the Office of Public Works that Louisburgh Garda Station is to be refurbished following recent water damage caused by burst water pipes. The building experienced water damage to the ceiling, electrical fittings and storage heaters; however, preliminary clean-up operations have taken place to allow the building to dry out. Funding has now been provided by An Garda Síochána to refurbish the Garda Station at Louisburgh and tenders are expected to be issued at the end of the month.

Lost Country exhibItion in the Custom House Studio

Lost Country is an exhibition exploring place, memory and the links between past and present by artist Feargal O’Malley. It focuses on construction of landscapes from childhood memories of time spent in Westport, and the day-to-day life of the artist growing up and as an adult in Craigavon, Northern Ireland. Certain memories come to mind even though we are located in completely differnt environments. Each piece reflects how stimulus from the artist's life in Craigavon can prompt memories of his childhood holidays in the west of Ireland and inform a visual portrayal of these memories. The resulting imagery can be somewhat idealistic, - given the dramatic changing landscape in both areas - a result of the recent housing boom. Feargal O’Malley is an artist based in Co Armagh. His exhibition runs until August 24 in the Custom House Studios Gallery which is located at the Quay in Westport and is open every day. You can call 098 28735 for more information.

Is there any space for the public?

What is a civic, public, space in Galway? Is it a publicly owned land or building where people can assemble and meet or in today’s society does it only mean pubs and shopping centres which are privately owned and run for profit? What about those with disabilities, how do they experience Galway city?
