Ballina Town Council gives €5,000 to St Patrick’s Day Parade

Ballina Town Council has agreed to give €5,000 funding towards the Ballina St Patrick’s Day Parade this year. “Without the support of this council the parade would struggle to exist,” Cllr Johnny O’Malley told the meeting. “Over the past number of years with the support of this council we have turned it into one of the bet parades in the country.”

No St Patrick’s Day trip for Ballina councillors

The members of Ballina Town Council this week decided that there would be no foreign trip this year for the Méara for St Patrick’s Day. Offensive graffiti on the Greenway from Westport to the Quay, was condemned by a local area councillor at a meeting on Monday, however the senior executive officer, Martin Keating, reassured members that in comparison to other towns graffiti in Westport is at a much lower level.

The Order of Malta was founded in the 12th century in Jerusalem to care for Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land and along pilgrimage routes through Christian Europe. Subsequently they were known as the Knights Hospitallers and when they came to Ireland they maintained hospitals for the sick, the poor, and the needy, and hostels for the use of travellers. Ballina looks to push ahead with CCTV

The reality of Ballina getting a monitored CCTV system moved a step closer this week. Chairperson of the Ballina Joint Policing Committee, Ballina town councillor Johnny O’Malley, told members that following a number of meetings, the project was ready to go forward to an application stage for funding under the RAPID programme. Ballina is one of a number of towns across the country which was given RAPID status, which makes funding available for a number of programmes to revitalise areas in the town.

Black day for Westport as fish factory announces it is to close

The imminent shut down of Skrettings Ireland fish feed factory in Westport, announced this week, is devasting news for the 22 workers and dozens of subsidiaries at the plant. The company, which will close by the end of the year, has been in Westport since 1989, with almost half the staff working there for more than 20 years. Latest live register figures recorded 1,846 people already signing on in Westport up to the end of August, and SIPTU shop steward Owen O’Malley, a worker at the plant since 1990, has described this latest job loss news as a massive blow.
