Hollymount road race ready for action

When the trees are almost bare, and starry starry nights and frosty mornings return, it must be time for Hollymount Road Races. Yes, the 46th version of this legendary Annual International event takes place next Sunday, November 13. There will be three races around the familiar testing 3k circuit. Many famous names in Irish athletics have done battle here over the years and once again a top class field is expected from clubs around the province and further afield, as well as the traditional coachload from the Liverpool area.

Rehearsals are currently under way for Druid’s upcoming production of John B Keane’s Big Maggie and among the cast is Keith Duffy who plays the part of travelling salesman Teddy Heelin. At the end of Monday’s rehearsals, Duffy sat down to talk about the play and reflect on some of the highlights of his years in music, television, and performing. “I’m very lucky to have had the career that I have,” he states candidly. “As a teenager I wasn’t very ambitious, I was quite insecure and didn’t have much confidence in myself. Getting into Boyzone was the first bit of luck I’d had in life. And we didn’t really know what it was we were trying to create, whether it was a hit single or to sell out a big venue, we were all new to the business. Everything just seemed to happen naturally, it’s only looking back you realise how lucky we were.

On Monday morning September 4 1939, the Galway harbour master Capt T Tierney was listening to a radio message from the Norwegian freighter Knute Nelson to say that it was steaming to Galway with 430 survivors from the Athenia, which was sunk by torpedo 250 miles north-west of Inishtrahull Island, off the Donegal coast. There were injuries among the survivors. Many were distressed and suffering from hypothermia. It requested urgent assistance.

Several artists showcase at Shankhill Castle

Ceann 2011, is an exhibition being held in the historic setting of Shankill Castle in Paulstown, Co Kilkenny as part of the Kilkenny Arts Festival.
