Less than 30 per cent of household waste recycled

In spite of the fact that 76 per cent of Westmeath homes were provided with segregated waste collection, only 27 per cent of the county’s household waste was recycled last year while the remaining 73 per cent was landfilled, according to a new report.

Castlebar and Ballina move up in IBAL rankings

Castlebar and Ballina were both celebrating earlier this week with the news that they have moved up in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) standings for 2008. Castlebar saw its ranking shoot up 28 places from number 36 last year and break into the top ten at number eight. Ballina were also celebrating a double-digit rise from number 49 to 37, moving it from a seriously littered town to a moderately littered town.

How each area fared in IBAL

Carlow Approach Road: Moderately Littered. A wide sweeping road with grassy banks which were neatly cut. However, there was a definite litter presence – plastic sheeting, plastic bottles and coffee cups.
