Westmeath’s senior and U21 footballers both have crunch games this Saturday against near neighbours Meath. At 2pm our U21s welcome Meath to Mullingar to contest the Leinster quarter final. There is a 7.30pm throw-in in Pairc Tailteann for the third round of the National Football League.

It looks like a compromise might have been reached in the vexed question of pumping Shannon water to feed the projected Dublin deficit with the suggestion this week of a holding reservoir in Derrygreenagh bog, just outside Rochfortbridge.

In the intermediate championship there are two intriguing quarter-final ties to be sorted, one under lights in St Lomans on Friday night, the second in Cusack park on Saturday.

A set of bylaws to regulate the use of Westmeath’s lakeshore areas is to be considered by councillors and put on public display in the coming months.
