More than 150 men and women who left Ballina to fight in the Great War from 1914 to 1918 are to be remembered and honoured in a new memorial at the Killala Road Green Park, Ballina.

At the annual LAMA awards in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, the In Humbert’s Footsteps picked up the Best Gathering Event award for Ireland. It beat off stiff competition from 10 other events from all over Ireland including the hotly tipped JFK Homecoming event in Wexford.

There was celebrations for Mayo at the Local Authorities Members Association (LAMA) awards on Saturday night when In Humbert’s Footsteps picked up the Best Gathering Event for Ireland. The festival which saw re-enactments of General Humbert’s march through Mayo during 1798 in Killala, Kilcummin, Lahardane, and Castlebar saw off competition from 10 other events for the award.

The Newman Institute are embarking on a very popular fundraising event on Saturday, November 16 in Hotel Ballina. Sixteen budding dancers have volunteered to compete for the prestigious prize of winning champion of the dance floor competition. The couples have been involved in an intensive dance training campaign for months under the stewardship of choreographer and dance instructor Marie Brennan. The main sponsor for the event is Paddy Connolly 4x4, Killala Road, Ballina. Each dancer has also secured a sponsor for raising funds. Proceeds from all the fundraising organised by the Newman's Institute's fundraising committee will go towards establishing a student bursary as well as contributing towards the running costs of the Institute.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney of funding for the reconstruction of the harbour walls and for safety aspects at Killala Pier.
