The Cappa Ensemble brings its dazzling artistry to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for a wonderful classical concert on Monday November 8 at 8pm. Named after the celebrated 17th century Italian violin-maker Gioffredo Cappa, this exciting young chamber ensemble has quickly established itself as a quartet of outstanding artistry, touring extensively in Australasia and Japan as well as throughout the UK. Winner of Music Network’s Young Musicwide competition in 2009, the quartet boasts a line-up of top performers in their own right: Michael McHale (piano); cellist Brian O’Kane; violinist Bartosz Woroch; and violist Adam Newman. GMIT student innovation winners

GMIT Castlebar has announced its student innovation winners. First prize went to Joanne Clarke from Cloonfad, Co Roscommon, a second year student on the BSc in architectural technology. She was awarded a prize of €1,000 cash and incubation space in the GMIT Innovation Centre for two months. Second prize was awarded to Diarmuid Higgins from Rush, Co Dublin, who is a second year student on the BA in outdoor education. He won €600. Both prizes are sponsored by APC and AIB.

Jobs in jeopardy with €8m cut in road grants

Mayo County Council’s government grants for the 2009 road work scheme were slashed in last week’s budget by €8 million, the Mayo Advertiser can reveal. This includes a €5.5 million reduction in the regional and local road restoration grant from €13.1 million to €7.6 million.

Get on your bike to help children

On Sunday July 5 the Children’s Cancer Charity for the West – CD’s Helping Hands will hold a charity motorbike ride to raise much needed funds children affected by cancer in the west of Ireland. The Nifty 50 will take place between Knock and Tubbercurry and all are welcome to get involved or just go along to enjoy the ride!
