A group of innovative business owners from Westport have come together to create a plan which will see the Market Lane area of Westport become Ireland’s first sustainable neighbourhood in the west of Ireland.

Minister for State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has congratulated Pamela Flanagan, chairperson of the Westport Tidy Towns Committee, and the committee itself, on the wonderful results for Westport in the Tidy Towns competition 2011. Westport area and town councillors have rejected a new core strategy as part of Westport’s development plan, even though the town manager Joe Beirne advised that they take on board variations to the town’s development and environs plan.

Accidents occurring at Barley Hill

The members of the Belmullet Electoral Area committee gave their full backing to the preferred route of the improvement works to be carried out on the N59 from Westport to Mulranny this week. Director of services and county engineer Joe Beirne gave the members an update on the preferred route, which will keep very much in line with the existing road.

Union representatives in Mayo County Council were criticised by Councillor Peter Flynn, who described these representatives as “unrealistic”.

It is hoped that the contract for the town hall project will go to tender next month and will be constructed in the next year, according to Westport town architect Simon Wall.

The issue of zoning of lands for housing is set to become a hot topic for discussion amongst elected members and the officials of the four local authorities in Mayo over the coming months. Following on from a presentation on the Core Strategy for the county, which has to come into effect under the Planning and Development Act 2010 to the County Council early last week, it was the turn of the Westport Electoral Area Committee and Castlebar Town Council to get briefed on the matter. One councillor in particular laid the blame at the foot of the councillors themselves for the over zoning of lands.
