Mark Kennedy, a driving force behind The Galway Famine Memorial committee and the Galway Famine Ship Memorial Project, will give a public lecture on The Famine tonight.

THIS SATURDAY and Sunday will see two nights of indie, rock, metal, electronic alternative and punk at the Roisin Dubh. Twelve bands are giving it everything in aid of the Celia Griffin Famine Memorial.

Like most towns in Ireland, Galway was used to food shortages; they had occurred here in 1816, 1817, 1822, 1831, and in 1842 there were food riots in the city. Nobody, however, was prepared for what happened in 1845 when the potato crop failed. As winter approached, the situation did not seem any worse than usual, though people were concerned about food being exported from the docks while there was a shortage locally.

A public lecture on The Archaeology of the Irish Famine, by distinguished US Professor Charles E Orser jr, will take place in NUI Galway on Monday July 5 at 6pm in the D’Arcy Thompson lecture theatre (Arts/Science Building).

A successful series of cultural events took place locally in the week leading up to the National Famine Commemoration in Murrisk. The organising committee of these events would like to thank all those who attended the events throughout the week and made voluntary donations to famine relief totalling almost €2,000.

The proposal for a memorial to Famine victims on Mutton Island, made recently by Galwayman and writer Mark Kennedy, deserves the full support of Galway people and organisations.
