Athlone is mourning the death of well-known local chef Michael Talty, whose body was retrieved from the River Shannon on Sunday.

The Chalet seafood restaurant in Keel Achill was established in 1963 by the Hassett family and has continued to be run by the family ever since. The original building was timber hence its name The Chalet. The present restaurant was built in 1994 and comprises two dining areas which cater for 80 plus diners. Brendan Lydon of Nestors Supervalu Oranmore has been short-listed as a finalist for the prestigious REI – Retail Excellence Ireland “Rising Star of the Year” Award.  A Mayo man and avid GAA fan, Brendan has 15 years loyal service with the Oranmore branch. He is an integral part of the Supervalu Oranmore Butcher team which include: Arthur, Cormac, Kieran, Amanda, Michael, Oliver and Gerard.

Mayo mourns death of young GAA star

The GAA community and wider community in Mayo were in mourning this week following the death of the talented 19-year-old Darragh Doherty who lost his life in a road traffic collision on Sunday night. Doherty from Ballyhenry in Kilmaine was killed in a single vehicle traffic collision at Carromore, near Ballinrobe on Sunday night.
