Fine for German woman convicted of illegal dumping

A German woman who was living in Ballyhaunis was convicted of illegal dumping on a site at Clare, Claremorris, which had 70 tonnes of waste and cost Mayo County Council €10,650 to clean up. The woman was fined €1,000 plus €750 costs at Claremorris District Court this week.

The issue of what happens once illegal dumping is reported to the council raised its head at this week’s monthly meeting of the Castlebar electoral area committee. Fine Gael Councillor Henry Kenny brought up the issue asking: “I have reported illegal dumping myself on a number of occasions, I’d just like to know what the follow up is on this dumping, do they come along and remove the materials that are dumped and what do they do after to investigate who is doing the dumping?” Cllr Kenny’s enquiry was backed up by Labour party Cllr Johnny Mee who told the meeting, “I agree with Cllr Kenny, there is an ongoing problem in this area where rubbish is just being dumped by people in the town. It’s a sad sight and it’s an appalling behaviour that has to be clamped down on by the council and the public in general.”

Material contravention passed

Following a failed effort last year to pass a material contravention in relation to an application which was submitted by Brendan Byrne and Sons Ltd for a mixed use residential scheme (including residential, crèche and gym) on zoned land in the Lodge Road area, all councillors, bar Councillor Myles Staunton, were in favour of the development.

Convictions in illegal dumping case which cost council €10,650 to clean up

Four convictions were recorded in Claremorris District Court this week for illegal dumping at a site in Claremorris which cost Mayo County Council over €10,000 to clean up. One person pleaded guilty to the charges in court, while one other person was convicted in her absence and two others who pleaded not guilty were also convicted by Judge Mary Devins.

Kenny condemns illegal dumping at Castlebar graveyard

Fine Gael leader Deputy Enda Kenny has condemned those responsible for dumping rubbish at the graveyard beside Lough Lannagh. The dumping is taking place at the weekends and has occurred twice over the past fortnight. The Mayo TD visited the area last Saturday morning to see the damage for himself and assisted in the clean-up with Councillor Ger Deere and Mr Ernie Sweeney.
