The Galway City Council has voted to make a second bid to the Government seeking funding to assist with the pipe replacement in Old Mervue and other areas of the city affected by the lead water crisis.

Not long after 9am on Saturday as the boxes were opened in Leisureland and the tallymen got to work, patterns began to emerge that would remain unaltered throughout the day. Galway was giving its backing to Labour, but it was not exactly punishing Fianna Fáil.

When the results came in on Saturday it was clear that Ireland had raised high the Red flag, donned a blue shirt, kept a few Independents on side, and delivered the mother of all kickings to the Government parties. Well not quite everywhere. Typically Galway didn’t quite follow suit.

There is “utter confusion” regarding the upgrade of the water distribution system in Old Mervue and a recent letter from City Hall to local residents has only confused matters further.

The recession not only makes things hard, it makes them near impossible. Money is needed to achieve results in transport, infrastructure, and the environment, yet progress must be made in all these areas if Galway is going to come through the economic downturn relatively unscathed.

“Do not trust the horse, Trojans. Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts,” so wrote the great Roman poet Virgil. Labour councillor Billy Cameron might paraphrase it as: “Do not trust independents, Galwegians. Whatever it is, I fear they may be hiding their true colours.”

During the merciless, and relatively recent Battle of Stalingrad, (July 1942 to February 1943), 207,000 horses were killed on the German side alone (the human cost was an unimaginable one million). Animals are still used to help solders navigate rough terrain, or for dolphins to seek out mines, and dogs to sniff out contraband.
