Large volume of call-outs for Mayo Mountain Rescue Team in past few weeks

The last few weeks have been among the busiest in the history of Mayo Mountain Rescue Team. Team leader Mary Walsh noted that since Reek Sunday, at the end of July, to September 7, the team have responded to 14 call outs. “It is unprecedented in the history of the team that we have had such a concentration of call-outs in the last number of weeks,” she said. Similar sentiments were expressed by deputy team leader Declan Conway, who remarked that in all his years on the team, he had never seen such a demand for its services.

Council to engage with agencies over lifeguard cover

Mayo County Council is to engage with An Taisce and other agencies over the life guarding requirement for beaches to retain a blue flag. The issue of having lifeguard cover on all blue flag beaches during the bathing season has caused a problem in the county. A number of blue flag beaches in the county that did not get much use by the public during the bathing season still have to have lifeguard cover during this season to maintain blue flag status.

Galway teams pick up golds at All Ireland first aid competitions

Galway Red Cross picked up three awards at the recent All-Ireland Red Cross Cadet and Novice First Aid competitions. The competitions were for cadets aged 10 to 16 and novices from 16 to 18 and were held in the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny. There are two competitions in each grade, an individual event and a team competition which consists of four first aiders.
