The condition of the roads in the Ballina area after the recent cold spell led to a lengthy discussion at this week’s Ballina electoral area meeting. “The national roads inspector was in the area yesterday (Tuesday), to see the damage that has been caused,” senior engineer for Mayo County Council Noel Burke told the meeting. “We have asked him to allow us to be as flexible as possible with the local road grants that we have applied for. We hope they will let us be discretionary on where we spend the money rather than just rely on the list of priorities we sent up before the cold spell set in.”

The Fine Gael party recently recognised the life-long service of Paddy Cannon, Westport Road, Castlebar, to the Fine Gael organisation. Mr Cannon was presented with a commemorative Michael Collins photograph to mark the occasion at the recent annual general meeting of the Henry Kenny, Castlebar, Fine Gael Branch. At the meeting, Mr Cannon was also elected to the position of honorary president for the local Fine Gael branch.

Fine Gael Town Councillor Ger Deere has proposed a motion for debate at the next meeting of Castlebar Town Council calling on Eircom to replace all of their concrete manhole covers. The recent cold spell has caused some of their older concrete covers to completely disintegrate, and the motion calls on Eircom to replace them as a matter of urgency.

The Minister of Social and Family Affairs has been accused of engaging in an attack on farm spouses, who had been awarded pensions retrospectively but are now being asked to refund what has been awarded to them by the Department.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD has received assurances from the HSE that specialist mental health services in Castlebar will be adequately met with supports in place to meet the social needs of those concerned. This follows the closure of the Psychiatric Day Centre which operated for many years at the Sacred Heart Hospital. Mayo Fine Gael TD John O'Mahony has called on the Transport Minister Noel Dempsey and Environment Minister John Gormley to reverse their decision not to provide emergency funding to repair roads damaged by the recent bad weather. Deputy O’Mahony said the current state of the roads will cost lives if they are not repaired.

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has criticised the Fianna Fáil/Green Government for what he calls “their reckless approach to job security and creation” as Mayo’s unemployment figures went through the roof over the past two years. Funding of €36,000 for Castlebar Voluntary Social Services based at Castle Street car park has been welcomed by the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD.  The funding has been issued by the Department of Health and Children as part of their 2009 allocation from National Lottery funds. The funding has been issued to aid in refurbishment work at the social services centre which provides numerous important services around the wider Castlebar area.
