There are no “hidden bombs or traps” in the Lisbon Treaty, according to NUI Galway president Jim Browne who is urging the people of Galway to vote yes in the upcoming referendum.

DB Cycles on Magazine Road, Athlone launched their new website this week, www.dbcycles.ie. The website carries extensive information on their bicycle collections for adults and children as well as information on the new government Bike to Work scheme.

New approach to waste collection can save money - Cllr Aengus O'Rourke

At the September meeting of Athlone Town Council, Councillor Aengus O'Rourke asked the council executive to examine the cost implications for the council if it were to withdraw completely from providing a commercial and domestic waste collection service. At the meeting on Monday evening Cllr O’Rourke said, “This council currently provides a waste collection service to homes and businesses in the Athlone area at a significant loss to this council. The cost of running the service for 2009 will be approximately €813,000 and the projected income from the sale of the bin tags will be in the region of €500,000. The simple maths is that the council is set to lose in excess of €300,000 to operate the service.”

Lisbon will worsen the economic crisis — Conway-Walsh

“Lisbon will worsen the economic crisis both in Ireland and throughout Europe” according to Sinn Fein Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh. “The threat to our economy is not in a rejection of Lisbon. It is in the ongoing privatisation policies of the government and the failure to properly invest in education, health, childcare, research and development and broadband.” Rectifying these failures will be all the more difficult if the Lisbon Treaty is ratified, the councillor claims.
